Peaceful Protest: MLA Dallas Brodie Does Not Represent Our Values
Intersection of Arbutus and Nanton Ave (meet at northeast corner by Arbutus Club)
Next Sunday, join your neighbors in the Vancouver-Quilchena riding to take a stand against the harmful actions of MLA Dallas Brodie, who has mocked the heartfelt testimonies of Residential School survivors and engaged in ongoing racist behaviour.
Together, let’s champion compassion, kindness, and respect as we honour the courage of survivors who have shared the profound truths about the intergenerational impacts of the Residential School system.
MLA Brodie was kicked out of the Conservative Party Caucus on March 7th. Her behaviour is unacceptable for anyone in Canada and is inexcusable for an elected official. Brodie has now appointed herself leader of a new, far-right party (a position which comes with a big raise) with only 2 members. We did not vote for her to represent OneBC and she cannot effectively represent the interests of our riding. She should resign so a by-election can be held.
There are moments when we must look around and ask who will speak up. The answer is, we will! We should all speak up when politicians use issues like this to rewrite history for their own benefit and distract from other issues that require attention.
More information:
Residential school denialism isn’t about denying the schools existed, but rather about “misrepresenting and minimizing residential school truths”: https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/residential-school-denialism-explainer-1.7485959
Guidelines for the protest:
DO
Bring family-friendly signs expressing your views
Bring dogs, kids, and neighbours
Dress for the weather
Chat respectfully with people who pass by and wish to engage
Remember the “paradox of tolerance”: if we tolerate intolerant views, intolerance will take over.
DON’T
Worry if you don't have a sign- we have extras!
Scream at people or disturb the neighbours
Block the sidewalk so people cannot pass
Engage in personal attacks on MLA Brodie, who, despite holding views we vehemently oppose, is a woman and mother serving the public. Threats of violence and misogynistic or sexualized slurs and attacks are absolutely not welcome in this space. We must respect everyone’s humanity, even those we disagree with.
